Debbie Dalton: Her son, Hunter, was a 23-year-old healthy and vibrant college graduate. He overdosed on cocaine unknowingly laced with fentanyl, a powerful opioid drug that is 50-100 times more powerful than morphine. Tragically, he died a week later. She will be discussing the dangers with recreational drug use. Debbie began the Hunter Dalton #HDLIFE Foundation. Click here for more information on the #HDLIFE Foundation.

One Split Second
What: DREAM Team partnered with AT&T and several guest speakers to fight the deadly distracted driving epidemic. Three of guest speakers shared their unique stories to the sophomore class, students who are just learning how to drive.
Following the morning assembly, DREAM Team and AT&T used virtual reality simulations to demonstrate the dangers of texting and driving. Students participated during their lunches and signed the AT&T "It Can Wait Pledge" to not be distracted.
That evening, DREAM team, guest speakers Tammy Garlock and AT&T's Clef Metcalf presented to parents. DREAM Team's presentation featured statistics, common assumptions, and a student panel, focusing on the underlying reasons why people drive distracted. Tammy Garlock shared her heart-wrenching story of how her son died from distracted driving and Clef Metcalf provided distracted driving simulations.

Do Good December
When: December-January
Where: Veterans Bridge Home
What: For the “Do Good December” event, we decided our focus would be on local veterans. Too many times veterans are thought of as being hurt, old, and sad, so we wanted to shatter that stereotype. We learned of the sacrifices veterans made to protect our country and why it is important to give back to the brave men and women who are fighting for us. Dream Team focused on three veterans to offer our gratitude and appreciation for their selfless sacrifice for serving our country.

The Fight Inside
When: January 29, 2019
Where: Myers Park Auditorium
What: “The Fight Inside” was an assembly for the junior class focused on the topic of Substance Use Disorder and breaking the stigma that comes along with addiction. Three recovering addicts shared their unique stories. They addressed the stigma associated with addiction, and why the name has been changed to substance USE disorder, NOT substance ABUSE disorder. Students were informed that addiction is a disease that can begin gradually and can progress rapidly and no one is immune. Our speakers also addressed how to find help, whether for themselves, a family member, or for a friend, to fight addiction.

Selwyn Buddies
When: Once a month
Partnership: Each of the Dream Team members is partnered with a selected Selwyn 5th grader. Once a month, Dream Team members have lunch and hang out with their buddies! Throughout the year, tight bonds are formed as these DT members become role models to their buddy. We help them develop positive social skills and provide valueable mentoring, but more importantly we become friends. While we help them grow, they also help us grow.

Team Bonding
UNCC Low Ropes Course: Before Dream Team could serve the larger community, we first needed to know how to best serve each other. We needed to discover our strengths and weaknesses, and how to balance and blend our unique personalities to deliver a stellar product.
June 8, 2018: Soon after we got accepted, Dream Team participated in the Low Ropes Course at UNC-Charlotte as part bonding, part learning. We knew that our first big event was in September with little time to spare. Dream Team was tasked with challenging obstacles that tested our teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. We literally had each other’s backs as we pushed past our limits to the end goal.
January 13, 2019 Escape Room: To kick off the spring semester with the anticipation of new small teams, the Dream Team participated in a second team-building activity at an Escape Room called The Box near the east side of Charlotte. Competition was fierce as each small team had to strategically collaborate to escape the “box” and solve the mystery in one hour. It was a lot of fun, especially during the week of midterms and final exams. Even though we were divided, both teams prevailed.
